I'll start off by saying that the concept of home made baby food always sounded very intimidating to me. I know my way around in the kitchen, but it always sounded like so much work! However, once I got hooked on the Jessica Seinfield cookbooks, making purees became like second nature. Sounds weird, but it's true. If you haven't hear of her cookbook, you can check out her website (
HERE) or blog (
HERE) to find out more. The first cookbook tell you all the basics of pureeing. It's REALLY not hard - just have to budget some time. For me, I do my pureeing on Sunday afternoon when we're winding down from the weekend and gearing up for the next week. I was making puree to put in our every day meals anyway so why not package some up for my baby boy to enjoy? I remember when I was starting Savannah on baby food, it seemed like forever until she warmed up to the idea of any kind of food that wasn't mommy's milk or a bottle. However, Caleb has loved the home made baby food from day one. I don't know if it's just because his palate is more refined or if it has something to do with it being home made...who knows? But here is what I do:
First you steam your veggies. I use a stock pot with a steaming basket (you can also roast veggies...I roast sweet potatoes)
Then, I have my baby food storage containers ready. For stage one, I bought THESE. Once your veggies are done steaming (most don't take longer than 10 minutes) throw them in the food processor. I'm slightly obsessed with mine! This is zucchini squash; it looks disgusting I know, but Caleb loved it.
Then, you spoon out the mixture in the containers and store or serve!
